Catalytic converters are a part of a car’s exhaust system and contain precious metals like platinum, which help reduce the vehicle’s emissions. Like any other part, however, the parts can also fail, which may cause your vehicle to fail smog inspections.
Over time, the honeycomb-shaped material inside a catalytic converter can disintegrate or clog, causing poor emissions. Not only can that lead to failing an emissions inspection, but it may also lead to poor engine performance.
A growing problem is catalytic converter theft, mainly due to the platinum. Thieves will usually cut the catalytic converters from cars to sell them for scrap. A vehicle with a missing catalytic converter may be obvious because it will be loud the first time you start it.
If you think your catalytic converter was stolen, it might be a good idea to file a police report. Another tip – contact your insurance, as the replacement catalytic converter may be covered.
